Nice roaster, solidly built
I've been roasting all of my own coffee for about three years. I've used a small porcelain hand roaster (works great, but not practical for the volume I consume), I've used air poppers (nice, idiot proof method but provides zero flexibility), cast iron skillets (not recommended) and the Behmor roaster, which I quite like, but it has its own limitations. The Kaldi New Wide roaster was a gift from my dad and I've only done one roast with it so far. And while it's not perfect, it does fit into a market black hole. A drum roaster built like a tank, with a sample spoon to check the development mid-roast, that roasts evenly and can release the beans quickly is surprisingly hard to find in the price bracket the kaldi fits into. For those reasons alone I think this is a great product. The chaff collector is okay. You have to provide your own heat source. There's no forced air or air control...ambient air is all you get unless you buy their add on product (I'm thinking of DIYing my own). These are the weaknesses, but none of them are deal breakers. The other roasters I've used all have bigger trade offs. But that's the home market for roasters at the moment. I have the dual thermometer version, and since I'm using this to teach a class on home roasting, I prefer not having too many electronics that can easily overheat and need regular replacing. If you're new to roasting, this might not be the best option. I knew what I was getting myself into with this roaster, the weaknesses were anticipated and acceptable. At this price point I think it's very good and even though my first roast went too fast (regulating temperature is manual and takes some dialing in) the roast was very even and made a decent cup of coffee 24 hours later. With how fast I got to first crack and (accidentally) second crack, I expected the beans to be scorched earth. A complete loss. But they still turned out better than anything I can buy locally out here in the country. Recommended.
