FUN, INFORMATIVE AND GREAT TO WORK ON FOR SPECIAL SKILLS
As coloring books go, this belongs in my most favored group. I like this particular series of coloring books as they are not only entertaining, but quite informative at the same time. There are over 40 full page drawings in this particular work, all are quite detailed and as far as I can tell, quite accurate. Each picture is accompanied by at least one rather lengthy paragraph explaining the picture and how it relates to life in ancient Greece. There are a couple of things to be noted about this, and indeed, other of the books in this series.First, I would strongly recommend the use of colored pencils rather than crayons. The pictures are just too detailed and parts of the pictures are simply too small to be used with crayons. A sharp colored pencil is needed to render the drawings completely effective.Secondly, the paragraphs of explanation accompanying each picture are done in a very small font and the information is quite detailed. The younger child most likely will not have the vocabulary nor reading skill to get much out of the information. An adult will be needed to read this information and possibly paraphrase.Third, there is some mild nudity found in this book. This nudity is not as blatant as that found inย Life in Ancient Egypt Coloring Book (Dover History Coloring Book) ย as there is no frontal nudity and bare breasts, but nudity is never-the-less there. It is manifested in this work as the author shows nude wresting and other sporting events. There is no frontal nudity and the picture is quite historically accurate. These pictures are easy to alter after scanning them if the adult so wishes. I personally had no problems with it but can well see how some parents might and most certainly teachers dealing with a large class.Forth, this book is ideal for working with kids who have problems with fine motor skills. (That is what I use it for). Even though the kids I work with have little or no concept of this time era (They cannot read), they never the less enjoy it because they have seen such of T.V. and at the movies and can relate via those movies. I discuss each scene with them - some of the information sticks; other does not.Fifth, the pictures in this book may be reproduce for graphic and craft applications, free and without special permission, provided you include no more than four in the same publication or project. This works out quite fine in my case as I only work with one to three children at a time. This book would be ideal for home schooling. The pages are easy to reproduce and you can get a lot of mileage out of this book.Sixth, if you are a overgrown child like I am, then you, the adult, will find that coloring from this book is actually quite therapeutic.Highly recommend this particular work and the others in this series from Dover Press.Don BlankenshipThe Ozarks

Great resource!
I am using this resource with homeschool Pre to 2nd grade children. This coloring book helps Greece come to life with pictures of markets, shipping, a wedding, several different tradesmen at their trade, children playing, senate, theater, school, ect...One warning, four pages (out of roughly 45 pictures) have nudity: two of Olympic games and one gym (tastefully covering the front, but showing male backsides) and then one of a topless dancing/acrobatic girl at a party. I choose to scan them, in order to give them clothing.Other content: there are solider scenes with weapons bristling, but only two battle scenes (one on water and one on land). For battle scenes both are tasteful, even for younger dc. It also includes about four pages of religious ceremonies/scenes, including the oracle at Delphi.Overall an excellent resource; very well done!!

Not classroom appropriate
I am disappointed because there was no way to look at this before purchasing. I should have known with John Greenโs name on it. Great content but unsuitable for anything younger than a college class like his Crash Course videos. I bought two coloring books. Anyone want to buy them from me?

Disappointed in this title.
We typically love Dover Coloring Books to use alongside our homeschool curriculums, however, this title was not a good fit at all. Upon first glance, there were far too many specific Greek events. That would be fine for older children but we are teaching a 9 year old and were attempting to have a general resource. Personal preference, but something other buyers may want to consider. Most concerning though were the illustrations of nudity, especially in reference to the page on symposiums. Along with the topless female acrobat (with arm covering just a small amount of upper anatomy), there was a description that included the topic of hiring female entertainers at the symposium. Perhaps this would be fine for older students, but it is not a resource I want to use for my young boy.We usually love Dover books and have always found them to be wonderful additions to our homeschool days. This book was a definite disappointment.

Great Historical Details
These coloring books are great. I use them as enhancements with the "Story of the World" history series. It allows those learning to get a grasp on how things really might have been. How things looked etc. It helps to paint a picture of progress.

If you like Greeks in authentic garb grab this book
6th graders used this for picture sources. No printer needed but black line images do copy clearly for classwork

Highly Recommend Dover Coloring Pages!
We're using this coloring book as a supplement to my 7 year old's world history studies. Each coloring page has an explanation description on the bottom of the page. We'd bought the knights and armor book and we liked it so much that we decided to check other books that fit with my kid's studies.

Great resource
This coloring book is a great resource if your kids are studying ancient Greece. The pictures are very detailed and the descriptions below give really great information. It is much more fun then just reading out of a book, and it helps my child visualize the stuff she is learning.

A Terrific Resource Book And A Wonderful Colouring Book On Ancient Greece Life.
This book works on two levels.Firstly as a colouring book this is excellent and surprisingly cheap.True you would be better with coloured pencils rather than paints or pens as both will bleed and actually go through the pages. The paper is not robust and the siren's cal of the photocopier set to 131% beckons.Secondly if you are in Education then this is the book for you.each page has a decent caption and explanation. So if you thought all that you could find in Ancient Greece ( grease) was ancient chips you are on to a Winner. As a Primary Teacher and History Coordinator I was always after good resources. This book had to be the best of my purchases for myself. The 44 detailed pictures of life in Ancient Greece are copyright free so you can photocopy them to your hearts content. What the drawings do is convey what life looked like in Ancient Greece. One idea I used to good effect was divide the class into groups and give them a blown up picture from the book.I asked the children to write on the sheet what they think the people could โhearโ in the picture. Then pass the sheet on to the next group and ask the groups to write what the people would be saying- speech bubbles and so on.Then smell, see and so on.Then we got each group to tell the others what had been written. This really got the concept of life in Ancient Greece across. If you are a parent who is studying the Ancient Egyptians then this is a really good purchase at a steal of a price. If you are a teacher then this could be the soundest investment you could make. The wonderfully detailed pictures and art depict life in Athens in the 5th and 4th centuries B.C.Then other pages cover the building of the Parthenon, a performance of a traditional Greek Play (Oedipus Rex No less) , a torchlight wedding procession, a really good one of children playing, Socrates' trial, the Olympian games which is always a winner and even one of Aristotle tutoring the young Alexander of Macedonia, John Green and Stanley Appelbaum the Authors have compiled a brilliant book.Get it while you can for pennies. Thanks for reading.

All drawn and a good use of space
All drawn and a good use of space. Colouring these as we work was a great way for students to pay attention to longer text readings about Athens.
